Full Vellum. Folio. 172 unn. Bll. Mit einem schonen radierten Titel mit dem Portrat Goltzius' und 131 grossen Medaillonportrats, gestochen von J. Gietleughen nach Hubert Golzius, samtlich in Zweifarbendruck. Von den ersten 6 Bll. ist die rechte untere Ecke mit geringem Textverlust abgerissen, in Bl. 60 kleines Loch. Alter blindgepresster Schweinslederbd. mit 2 schonen Borduren mit Dartstellungen aus dem alten und neuen Testament, signiert ME und mit der Jahreszahl 1558. (Etwas abgerieben, an der rechten unteren Ecke leicht beschadigt.) Magnificent engraved illustrations (portrait into medallions) printed with chiaroscuro. Booksellers colation notations on pastedown. Elegantly tooled full vellum binding, the spines in 6 compartments with raised bands. Photographs dispatched upon request. Small tidal marks (dampstaining) at the far margins occasionally. E la prima opera del celebre pittore e incisore fiammingo (Wurtzburg 1526 - Bruges 1583). La sua enorme passione per l'archeologia unita al talento per il disegno ne favorì lo sviluppo artistico nella realizzazione di illustrazioni di antichità e di medaglie in genere. Questo è il suo primo trattato, una lunga dissertazione sulle vite degli imperatori antichi a partire da Giulio Cesare, per ciascuno dei quali G. creò un grande ritratto a medaglione utilizzando per primo al mondo in tipografia la tecnica del chiaroscuro.
