SUBTITLED : ` A Romance of Old London '. The author of these 319 pages was a noted London novelist and journalist. He was for a time the edotir of the Sunday Times. He died in 1907. In this story we follow the slightly tainted career of Jack Sheppard noted burglar (c. 1742). LEARN the usage of terms like blowen, whittle-spinner, cracksman, jack-a-dandy, rummy cove, and rufflers. Characters include Peter Ferrish and Lady Martin Waller. Action takes place at the Cross and Mitre, Wych Street, Drury Lane, or the North Road. Story is annotated with historical footnotes - see page 52 (e.g.) - sometimes lengthy, which add greatly. Cond : Boards are blue with gilt lettering - face and spine. Floral graphic blind-stamped into front board. Boards worn at all extremities. spine band intact and v.g. +. End-papers are white. Issued w/o dust jacket (??) . Spine has very slight lean. Binding is shaken - esp. at page 15. Some marks (inconsequential) on ffep by p/o. No tears. minimal soiling. Excellent reading copy. Almost collectible. Quote (p. 138) : " It was not a mere fight for gate money. The men were well backed, and they had reputations to maintain.
