I wrote this book to share my story and help others heal as I have. Through my search for wisdom, I have learned that there is a seed of advantage in every situation, and by seeking wisdom, peace, and happiness, I have been rewarded with an abundant life filled with love, joy, and serenity.
Surviving the killing fields is only part of my story. Like millions of Cambodians forced from my home in Phnom Penh into the countryside, I suffered like all so-called newcomers. My dad was executed, and my mom was nearly executed as a result of treachery in a story I will share with you in this book. My brother and I suffered from starvation and infections that left us scarred both mentally and physically. All the new- comers were terrorized and tortured, and we came very close to dying from exhaustion from the long hours of forced labor.
I experienced grueling living conditions where our family was forced to live in a tiny hut with another family from the city. There were no sanitary facilities, and we endured constant fear of punishment or death. This was during the best of times for my family living under the Khmer Rouge. I witnessed many horrific and gruesome events that I cannot erase from my memory, despite my best efforts. There are many other books that describe these atrocities in graphic detail. This book is not one of them.
This book will not discuss the political climate that was so ripe for the fall
of Cambodia and the prevention of aid after the liberation at any length or the darker side of the genocide that turned Cambodians against each other, even among their own family. This book will tell some of my experiences and how I have healed and learned to find peace.
It is my sincere wish that reading this book will show that you, too, can find happiness and serenity regardless of your circumstances. I hope you learn to seek and find good in every situation and live a life filled with joy, love, and abundance.
