Folio (18 x 13 inches). Engraved allegorical title-page with original hand-colour in full, engraved index with original handcoloured border, double-page world map, maps of the four continents, and 37 maps of Italy, the Balkans and Anatolia, 12 terrestrial and celestial globe gores and relevant horizon rings, one double-page and one full-page plates of spheres and planes, one vignette tail-piece, all with original hand-colour in full (some occasionally heavy browning, some spotting, and pale marginal stains, small marginal tears affecting the map area on plates 5, 24 and 33). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt (worn at the extremities). Provenance: the ownership inscription of Monsigr. Alessandro Cante on the recto of the first blank. First edition of the first volume of an eventual three, volumes II and III being published in 1797 and 1801. Cassini was an important Italian globe-maker towards the end of the 18th-century, and this volume contains important directions on how to make globes, and includes complete sets of globe gores for a pair of globes. Interestingly the terrestrial globe has the title: "Globo Terrestre Delineato sulle ultime osservazioni Con i Viaggi e nuove scoperte del Cap. Cook Inglese. 1790", and as such an early depiction of his voyages. Europeans were intensely interested in Cook's discoveries for what they revealed about the exotic peoples and lands of the remote Pacific. More than anything else, Europeans wanted to experience the thrill of Cook's voyages vicariously, and that meant they required visualization. With his globe, Cassini planned to chart the course of Cook's three voyages. Using vivid color and meticulous accuracy, he prepared a vision that would serve as the best possible substitute for the actual journey to fascinated Europeans.
