First published in 1822, this autobiography of a seaman records the adventures of John Nicol during the American War of Independence and while in the West Indies from1776 to1783. Also at sea off Greenland (1784), in the West Indies again (1784-1785), in the South Seas and China (1793-1794), and during the French Revolutionary War off Egypt and in the Mediterranean (1794-1801). John Nicol served aboard HMS GOLIAH during the Battle of St. Vincent in 1797 and was in the same ship when Nelson destroyed the French fleet at the Nile in 1798. During this war he also served in the EDGAR, RAMILLIES and AJAX. This is an interesting and all too rare Lower Deck view of a sailor’s life in the last quarter of the 18th century ; an account all but forgotten until "re-discovered" during the 1930s. THE LIFE OF A SAILOR WHO FOUGHT UNDER JERVIS AT ST. VINCENT & NELSON AT THE NILE. LARGE PAPER COPY. Codice libro della libreria C140B080
Descrizione libro Farrar & Rinehart, New York, 1936. First Printing of the First Edition. A Very Good plus copy in beige cloth binding with red title band in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with chipping to the spine and edges. This first-person account of life as a 19th Century seaman was originally published in 1822, but in the intervening years none of the charm and immediacy of Nicol's account has been lost. Nicol's narrative of his 25 year job as a ship's cooper takes the reader around the globe twice, on three voyages to China, two to Egypt, twice around the Horn and the length of the East Coast of the Americas .
