Sonia Sotomayor se graduó summa cum laude de Princeton en 1976 y de la Escuela de Derecho de Yale en 1979. Trabajó como asistente del Fiscal de Distrito del Condado de Nueva York y luego en la firma Pavia & Harcourt. Desde 1992 hasta 1998, fue juez de la Corte Federal del Distrito Sur de Nueva York, y desde 1998 hasta 2009 en la Corte de Apelaciones de Estados Unidos para el Segundo Circuito.
