Exceptionally scarce signed First Edition, in original publisher's green cloth, stamped in nouveau pictorial light green, with gilt lock and skeleton emblem to spine with title, and gilt edges three. Plain endpapers, signed by the artist Alice B. Woodward January 1897. Woodward is regarded as one of the most prolific illustrators of the turn of the 20th century. A lifelong friend of Beatrix Potter, she was known mainly for her work in children's literature, secondarily for her scientific illustrations, which she began in her teens for her father at the Natural History Museum.
