Der erste Teil des Buches begründet die These, daß sich ästhetische Erfahrung in den drei Grundfunktionen der Poiesis, der Aisthesis und der Katharsis - so wird in Anknüpfung an die poetologische Tradition die produktive, rezeptive und kommunikative Seite der ästhetischen Tätigkeit expliziert - phänomenologisch beschreiben und historisch erfassen läßt. Der zweite Teil skizziert eine Funktionsgeschichte von Frage und Antwort, um ihre ästhetische Relevanz sodann poetologisch, im Gebrauch der Dichtung, und hermeneutisch, in der Rekonstruktion des fremdgewordenen Sinnhorizonts eines Klassikers (Rousseaus Nouvelle Héloïse) und der Epochenschwelle, die sich im Horizontwandel seiner Rezeption (in Goethes Werther) anzeigt, zu untersuchen. Der dritte Teil setzt mit einer Problemgeschichte des Horizontbegriffs und des dialogischen Verstehens ein, erläutert sodann Paradigmen der Vermittlung literarischer und lebensweltlicher Horizonte und führt zu dem Versuch, die drei Akte des Verstehens an einem Gedicht Baudelaires im Horizontwandel sukzessiver Lektüren zu beschreiben.
