A Book for the Home Circle is an anthology of semi-autobiographical and literary writings. The essay titles include ÒReading for Amusement,Ó ÒLiterary Women,Ó ÒRecollections of Rural Life in the West,Ó and ÒIs Patience a Virtue? (An Autobiography).Ó They provide musings on a variety of topics such as reading, education, western settlements, and moral values. Many include KirklandÕs personal experiences. Thick octavo. xi, [13]-312 pp. Steel-engraved frontispiece, engraved illustrated title, and six steel engraved plates, text illustrations. In a deluxe full leather original binding with gilt-paneled covers, gilt spine, tooled in compartments, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Hinges have been neatly reinforced. New endpapers. Moderate blue staining to front cover. Clean throughout. A good, bright copy. First edition. Uncommon. OCLC notes just one physical copy in U.S. libraries, though we have handled several copies. Caroline Kirkland (1801-1864) was a New York-born essayist, short story writer, abolitionist, and temperance advocate who settled with her family in Michigan. She wrote about the creation of Western settlement in her other books such as A New HomeÑWhoÕll Follow and Western Clearings, based on her family founding the town of Pinckney, Michigan. In her later years, Kirkland returned to New York, opening a school for girls and working as a magazine editor. She hosted literary salons, hosting writers such as Edgar Allan Poe. Kirkland was also a close friend and correspondent of Harriet Martineau. Codice articolo 17915
