Professor Das Gupta's study on the economic, social and political changes in the north Bengal district of Jalpaiguri during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries is a valuable contribution to the growing literature on regional-local history in India. Jalpaiguri had two sub-systems of colonialism - the European-dominated plantation system and the jotedar-adhiar relations - involving diverse forms of subjugation of basic producers. The broad focus of the study is on the unfolding of social and political movements. Some of the themes in the book are: nationalist politics in Jalpaiguri and its ambivalences, the social mobility movement among the Rajbansi Hindus and the origin and growth of the Communist movement. The study reveals a persistent dichotomy between a potential for radical socio-economic transformation and the eventual non-realization of the potential, and also attempts to explore the sources of this dichotomy.
