What is social class? Are class differences declining? This volume explores social class from three distinct but related perspectives: Sociological, demographic, and biological. A sociologist provides his conceptualization of social class, and examines the variety of class schema and the reliability and the validity of these schemata . Demographers then analyse the extent and causes of fertility, marriage, and mortality differences. Finally a biologist reflects on morbidity differentials, the extent and effects of migration, and the question of whether or not genetic differences exist between classes.

Product Description:

Four contributions on various aspects of social class are brought together, concentrating on different concepts of social class and the measures used are compared and the appropriateness of different class schemes for various purposes is considered. Questions relating to the treatment of women in class analysis are given special consideration. The second contribution reviews the associations between class and mortality in Britain and considers the trends over time. The third contribution is concerned with demography: with differences in fertility and marriage between social classes. The extent to which these parameters change with time and internationally is also discussed. The fourth contribution summarizes the biological variables that are associated with social class and seeks to account for the observed associations.
