New technologies have greatly expanded both the breadth and depth of analysis, and most forensic labs have access to exhaustive databases and specialized tools. This report assesses the feasibility, accuracy and technical capacity of a national database, including imagery from test firings of US and other firearms. It also assesses how well such a reference database could generate investigative leads about where the firearm was sold. The authors describe the contexts for ballistic imaging analysis, including firearm identification and the use of ballistic evidence, ballistic imaging and databases currently available, the implications for establishing such an image database, and future directions in technology such as micro-stamping and new standards for computer-assisted firearms identification.
