This first volume starts with an overview on current perspectives in genetic research and on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. This is followed by a selection of hot topics in pathophysiological research, from molecular studies to system-level investigations based on in vivo electrophysiological recordings and neurocomputational methods.

This issue of Progress in Brain Research is split over two volumes and captures all the richness and complexity of Parkinson’s Disease as a topic for basic, translational, and clinical investigation. This first volume, Part I: Basic Research, starts with an overview on current perspectives in genetic research and on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration (Section I: Genetic and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in PD). This is followed by a selection of hot topics in pathophysiological research, from molecular studies to system-level investigations based on in vivo electrophysiological recordings and neurocomputational methods (Section II: Cellular and system-level pathophysiology of the basal ganglia in PD).
The second volume, Part II: Translational and Clinical Research, follows on from this with sections entitled Animal models of PD, Exploring PD with brain imaging and Frontiers in PD treatment.
