Did the collapse of the Roman Empire relieve the suffering of the rural poor, or were they better off under the Romans and suffered more at the hands of their successors? Carr attempts to answer this question with reference to the situation in early medieval Spain. She draws on archaeological survey data from the Guadalquivir Valley in southern Spain, an area of political and economic importance under the Romans, to investigate the situation of the rural poor both and after the departure of the Romans and how their lives were transformed by changes in government. Carr presents a convincing argument that they were in fact better off under the Romans, when people had diversified to ensure their survival, and that the Vandal invasion of the 5th century not only brought devastation and terror, but also signalled the beginning of a period of insecurity and decline.
