John King shows how the prevailing emphasis on classical rather than religious imagery in studies of Queen Elizabeth in particular has hampered understanding of the importance of scriptural imagery in Tudor royal portraiture, illustration of manuscripts and books, and literature. The book elucidates the art of the woodcut, royal entries, dramatic entertainment, Foxe s heavily illustrated Book of Martyrs, Spenser s The Fairie Queene, and other literary works. In order to assess the transformation of regal style as a consequence of the Reformation, the author examined Henry Vil s orthodox image of dynastic obedience to the papacy and Henry VIII s revolutionary shift to a new conception of the monarch. He then shows how contrasting ideals of Edward VI as a Reformation king and Mary Tudor as a Counter-Reformation queen were fused in the praise of Elizabeth by English Protestants. - John N.
