Fanny and Anna Parnell were the sisters of the 19th century Irish patriot leader, Charles Stewart Parnell, and as a result were often neglected as historical personalities in their own right. The daughters of an Anglo-Irish landowner of County Wicklow and his American wife, they rejected the attitudes and privileges of their social class to become passionate Irish patriots. Through their writing, - poetry, pamphlets, and political essays, - their public speeches, fund raising and political activities as founders of the Irish National Land League in the United States, Canada and Ireland, they made an important contribution to the struggle for land reform and Irish Home Rule.
