The Norfolk Southern Railway was formed in 1982 and manages a 21,500 miles of railroads that extend over 22 states and even reaches into Canada. It is also famed as being America's safest system. It was formed out of a merger between the Norfolk & Western Railway and the Southern Railway. The book looks at the history of the former companies and what led to the merger. It continues with a look at the commodities carried, the organisational structure and the diesel locomotives that haul the trains. Richard Borkowski has been writing books and magazine articles about railroads for fifteen years. He is also an employee of Norfolk Southern, having moved through the ranks from conductor to dispatcher to his current position as a coordinator in the railroad\u2019s Transportation Planning Department. This is his first book for Voyageur Press. Mr. Borkowski lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
