"Just what is a Muscle Car?” Road Test magazine asked in its June 1967 issue. The answer: “Exactly what the name implies. It is a product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder’s philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it. . . . The Muscle Car is Charles Atlas kicking sand in the face of the 98 hp (73 kW) weakling." Unconcerned with the style or sophistication of its European counterparts, the American muscle car was built for straight-line speed and quickly became the darling of the power-hungry racer and serious gearhead.

In the intervening years, these down-and-dirty, high-performing beauties have earned their place in the automotive pantheon. As prized by collectors and aficionados as they are by denizens of garages and drag strips, these cars now fetch millions of dollars at auctions and feature in any story of America’s automotive glory days. The icons of muscle car art are on full display in this lavishly illustrated volume, each described in a detailed essay followed by a gallery of photographs that capture the art of the muscle car at its finest.

Recensione:
The sister title to this new book, Art of the Hot Rod, set a precedent for high production quality, coffee-table, drool-factor hot rod picture books. With every car shot out on the road in a mobile balck background 'studio' by photographer Peter Hardholdt, it's a study in photographic detail on some of the most iconic American automobiles of all time. There's little text bar an intro piece on each car, no captions whatsoever and not even every car is a concourse example(though they're all close) but as an assembeled work of cars all red-blooded men would like to own at least some of given half the chance it does it's job well. Split into three sections - the innocent years ('64-'68), the excessive years('69-'70) and the declining years('71-'74), with just under 50 cars covered in total....Custom Car, December, 2009...This book just hit the shelves and if you don t hurry it will be gone and unavailable for Christmas. This is another Motorbook coffee table book you must have if you have ever thought of owning a Muscle Car. It is a master piece of photography and turns are dreams into cars to lust over. There is data provided on every car and some historical information but the photos are what will make you drop to your knees, face Detroit and say a prayer of thanks. This isn t some goofy guys idea of some cool cars. The author David Newhardt is a car guy and a photographer in his own right. Peter Harholdt is also a major car guy and a guru in the photography world. To see the portable photo booth he used to shoot these cars is a true treat. If all of that isn t enough the Forward is written by Brock Yates, Mr. Cannonball himself. There are Three Parts to the book; The Innocent Years; The Excessive Years and The Declining Years. Within these three parts there are 47 Chapters, each one devoted to a different make and model of Muscle Car. Within each chapter are multiple photos of each car including an image of each car that covers two entire pages! If you only purchase one book this year, make it this one! --Legendary Collector Cars, November, 2009...Two new books recently dropped through our letterbox which will no doubt appeal to auto enthusiasts looking to treat themselves this Christmas. The first title is Art of the Muscle Car by David Newhardt with stunning photography by Peter Harholdt. If the name Harholdt sounds familiar then you may recall Peter contributed to our Tips from the Pros photography story back in March 09 and he took those amazing images for Art of the Hot Rod, the book authored by Ken Gross. At the time Peter mentioned he was working on a future title concerning muscle cars and we are pleased to report, this is it. If you like images so good you can almost touch the vinyl on the seat or the rough casting on an engine block, then Peter s offerings will leave you in awe. Of course, great photography is only one half of the equation, but even if you don t care to read this weighty book, you ll be staring at those photos for an awfully long time. Fortunately, the copy is just as entertaining and 47 significant muscle cars are covered. If you are looking for a lengthy technical description of each model then you ll be disappointed, on the other hand, if you are looking for lively prose to whet your appetite, then you will find it an ideal coffee table read. Chapters start out with The Innocent Years which chart significant muscle cars from 1964 to 1968, The Excessive Years comes next covering the 1969 to 1970 era, followed by The Declining Years with a focus on models from 1971 to 1974. All the old favourites are there such as Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Challenger and Cuda plus less well documented muscle cars like the 1970 Buick Gran Sport GSX and 1971 El Camino SS 454. --Drag Rod and Racing, December, 2009

Once the realm of greasers and gearheads, muscle cars are now among some of the most collected works of automotive art on the planet. And now you can see the icons of the muscle car world in these two top books. Art Of The Muscle Car features tons of top muscle cars each described in detail, followed by a gallery of photographs that capture the art of the muscle car at its finest. Both books feature amazing pics, weigh a ton and will give you loads to dribble over. -- --Fast Car magazine, January, 2010

This attractive ahrd back covers familiar territory but it's hard not to be seduced by Peter hardholt's studio photography. That and the occassionaly off-kilter choices, the author commendably seeing past teh usual shelbys and Hemi challengers. gaze in wonderment at the '69 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler Cale Yardbrough Special ( or 'dan gurney' edition for that matter), mrvel at how good a Dodge Charger 500 looks on steels, and dig the bonnet-mounted rev counter (red line 500 rpm...)of the 1970 Buick Gran Sprt GSX. To be honest, there's little to critisise. this is very much a coffee-table special but what little text there is reads well and provides a decent introduction to a much-loved slice of Americana - enough to make us haker for a '70 AMC AMX. In penske colours, naturally. --Octane, April, 2010
