Much research on US nuclear weapons production focuses on the federal government's remediation of environmental and human health issues associated with containment of radioactive materials. This case study treats why, how, and where such materials were used and the legacy of secret uranium processing on local communities today. Drawing on newly unclassified archival records, DeGarmo (political science, Southern Illinois U.- Edwardsville) presents a balanced analysis of the ideological argument that possible contamination is an acceptable risk for ensuring security and entrepreneurial interests. She traces the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works' contribution to the World War II atomic bomb project, but also includes photos showing improperly stored contaminated soil at the St. Louis plant and storage sites still awaiting remediation.
