Both the SR and GWR faced the same problem, the need to provide cost-effective services, and both companies came up with similar soloutions, the pull-push train which had a driving cab at one end of a rake of coaches. For the GWR this technology resulted in the creation of the easily identifiable auto-coach, about which a considerable amount has been published over the years, whilst on the SR the same pressures resulted in the concept of the pull-push rake, about which much less is known. These coaches, either converted from older rolling stock or built specially, were to be an essential part of the operation of the SR's branches right through to Nationalisation and beyond; indeed many lines were still using such stock when the Beeching Axe fell.
