This updated and revised edition of Union County, Pennsylvania: A Celebration of History explores the region's earliest days, when Chief Shikellamy was there, and the period when settlers ventured into the frontier area from Berks and Lancaster Counties. Written by the late Charles M. Snyder and first published at the time of the nation's bricentennial, this book is devoted to the development and growth of the different townships and boroughs of New Berlin, Lewisburg, Hartleton, and Miffinburg, as well as crossroad communities. The chapters focus on the politics of different eras, the evolution of the area's transportation networks, schools and school life, and the recreational pastimes over generations. The account of the Civil War's effect on Union County is augmented by a new chapter covering the county's involvement in World War I. Snyder's original text has been expanded and updated to reflect newly discovered material on the Amish in the nineteenth century and additional developments in Union County from 1970 to 2000. The appendix covers the range of architecture in the county, and is illustrated with drawings by Jeanette Campbell. Even readers fortunate enough to own the 1976 edition will want this new edition for its fresh point of view, new information, and new illustrations.
