It tells of Gawain's quest for a beautiful girl who (in different versions) has either visited Arthur and harped him to sleep, or has appeared to the King in a dream. . All the 31 texts and fragments it has been possible to trace, including material in private collections, are discussed, beginning with a complete list of all known manuscripts, recordings and published editions. . This is followed by biographical notes on the singers and reciters, most of whom can be identified from genealogical records and local tradition.
