Recensione:
Pip is a pup who lives with her family in Pengersick Castle in Cornwall. At the tender age of three months she makes the decision to leave and go in search of the exciting life of a smuggler. Picked up from the side of the road by the kindly Harry Carer Pip is adopted into a family of smugglers and the adventures begin. On their very first adventure Pip proves herself to be brave and resourceful, warning the smugglers of danger but not quite being strong enough to prevent their arrest. Following their rescue the family are visited by a well dressed stranger claiming to have come from the King of England with a special mission for Harry. This mission takes Pip and Harry on the road to London, and from there across the channel to France. Along the way they meet kings, princes, pirates and fellow smugglers. The adventure has many twists and turns, it is full of excitement and hard to put down, the black and white illustrations stand out and provide an added dimension to the excitement of the tale. An ideal red for children of 7 to 10, those who love animal stories and adventure, the first of three Pip stories is an exciting new book from a promising new author. --Louise Ellis-Barrett, The School Librarian, No. 2, Vol 55, Summer 2007
Here is a new writer for young people, an exciting and rewarding find. This is an excellent Cornish story with authentic background, a dog as the main character and a great spread of action from Cornwall to London to France. There are believable characters, an authentic setting and a strong plot. The black and white illustrations are contemporary and outstanding. Keep writing! --Holyer An Gof 2007
I was most engaged with the three books written by JAC West about the adventures of two dogs. Two of the books are about the adventures of one of them, Tartu, the other one Pip of Pengersick is about the far reaching adventures of Pip, who was adopted by a band of Cornish smugglers. These books, although primarily aimed at children, are extremely readable by adults, and I followed their adventures with as much attention as I give to more adult stories. All three of the books are illustrated by Oliver Lake. His contribution is considerable, not only do they thoroughly illustrate the characters and the stories, they are works of art in themselves. One wants to take each plate, frame it and hang it on the wall. They not only delightfully portray the characters, but also conjure up wonderful environments. I would be tempted to buy the books just for the illustrations alone. This series is so exciting and absorbing that I can hardly wait for further adventures. --Michael Seymour, ARCA, FCSD, FRSA
