FINALIST: 2010 BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS (Foreword Reviews) In his new book Paradise North, Lon Emerick celebrates both the village of Paradise (with wild blueberry pie at the Berry Patch Cafe) and the state of mind of many residents and visitors about the "land above the bridge." Includes 32 tales of a northern paradise told by a long-time lover of the Superior Peninsula of Michigan. Divided by the four distinct seasons of the region, the book is illustrated with 28 color photographs: Little Presque Isle in all seasons, storms on Lake Superior, Autumn color blazing from granite outcrops, fishing at a wilderness waterfall, ice rounds along the lake shore, and 23 black/white photographs and illustrations. Chapters range from excursions in all seasons, admiration for birds and wildflowers, out-of-the-way U.P. places, cautions about the region's future, as well as a nod to several talented residents. Chapters include: The Joy of Wilderness, Goin' Camp, Greening of the North, The Sound of Silence, Celts by the Inland Ses, A Daughter of the Land, From Lake to Shining Lake.

About the Author:
Lon Emerick, Professor Emeritus of speech pathology/audiology at Northern Michigan University, is the author of university texbooks, numerous professional articles and several other Upper Peninsula books, including award-winners Going Back to Central (Mine), The Superior Peninsula, You Wouldn't Like it Here and You STILL Wouldn't Like it Here. He is a self-proclaimed inspector of wild lands and waterfalls and a hearty admirer of Henry David Thoreau. He lives with his wife Lynn in a log home surrounded by the woods and waters of the U.P. of Michigan, not far from the south shore of Lake Superior. He has two daughters living and working in the forests of Oregon and Montana - as a wilderness manager, and a wildland fire helicopter manager.
Review:
Paradise North: Seasons in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a guide to the numerous seasons of Northern Michigan, where its position gives it very cold winters, but beautiful seasons elsewhere. Season by season, Lon L. Emerick gives readers a unique exploration of the nature of the region...With educational text, Paradise North is a top pick for those who enjoy the beautiful environment the north can provide. --Midwest Book Review

In his latest book, Lon Emerick...has written the Walden for Upper Michigan. While the book explores the magic of the U.P. through its diverse and beautiful seasons as well as the best activities and places to celebrate them, it also reflects environmental and nature preservation needs. As I read, I left my armchair to venture with Emerick into the woods, or walk down a country road or have pie at the Berry Patch Cafe in Paradise (Michigan)...the reading experience was enough to make me feel and see the shadows of the trees across the snow, to smell the crunching autumn leaves, to marvel over the million intricate details of nature as it renews itself each season. Emerick is a worthy travel companion through nature. --Marquette Monthly

This latest from Lon Emerick celebrates the wild beauty of our area via its seasons, with graceful prose and stunning photographs by Emerick and local artist Mark Mitchell. --Snowbound Books
