When a popular Texas State Senator running for reelection hires an assassin to solve his problem with a demanding young lover, he gets more than he bargained for--a murderer who enjoys his work, a media eager to exploit the scandal, and two detectives hired by the coed's parents to find their daughter. The Senator is one of the lady-killers. The other is known as "The Shark" because of the cold-blooded way he takes out anyone who gets in his way or who might get too close to uncovering his identity. The main characters are two sister detectives, Kate March, a former newspaper reporter, and Allison Chandler, a former clinical psychologist. Victoria's family, frustrated with the police investigation, decides to hire them. While the local media zeroes in on a potential scandal, the sisters split up the investigation which moves from Victoria's college and the disappearance of a potential witness to the other women who know the Senator intimately. When the sisters get too close to the truth, they become the Shark's next quarry. EXCERPT: The wind, howling through the fireplace, filled the house with an eerie noise. Kate decided to go downstairs and turn on the security system. She stood at the top of the landing glancing downward. The bottom floor was dark with only a small bit of illumination from the nightlight on the stairs. Was that the shadow of a figure moving quickly away or a tree limb waving and visible through the glass pane in the door? There were light switches at both the top and bottom of the stairway, but she was hesitant to turn them on. What if someone was inside? What if he was waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs? No, it would be best to go back to the desk and get her Smith. Then she could turn the light on and move quickly aside to avoid who knows what. She kicked off her shoes and backed up to the desk. Without turning around, she reached in and slowly pulled out the revolver. Swiftly she returned to the landing. Mentally counting to three, Kate switched on the light at the top of the staircase and moved to her left. Everything was still. As she stepped down the stairs, she heard a strange nose as if someone were turning a key in the lock. She called out, "Allison, is that you?" knowing it was not her sister but hoping to alarm anyone who might try to gain access to the house.... He was standing near the window, beside the shrubs on the right side of the house. The hurricane shutters were up, and the drawn shades gave her a false sense of security. Surprise would have been on his side, that is, if he had decided to grab her tonight. He chuckled as he played with the five cartridges in his pocket. She thought that the gun would help her but not if it wasn't loaded. He had been in the house again tonight, then changed his mind and decided to wait. He wanted both of them. Thanks to Mel Grant he knew they had his name.... So why was he hanging around? He liked watching her, and even more, he loved the sense of fear in her. She was like a puppet. He made a little noise like putting the master key in her lock and she ran around with her unloaded revolver trying to find out what was going on. He laughed to himself. He loved playing cat and mouse with her. He hadn't had this much fun with a woman for a long time.
