Child of Tibet - a lost innocence The Best Coffee Table Book? Someone called Child of Tibet the best coffee table book he had ever seen. It's a heartfelt publication that's not only beautiful but also serves a good cause. Obviously, it's great to hear such comments. But don't get me wrong, I didn't create this book for the sake of adding one more publication to the evergrowing pile of coffee table books. When I made Child of Tibet - a lost innocence I wanted to convey the hope that still remains for Tibet, the beauty of the culture and the natural wondrousness of the land. Foreword by the Dalai Lama I was honoured that His Holiness the Dalai Lama recognized what I was doing. Child of Tibet - a lost innocence combines beautiful images and design, anecdotal stories, a brief history of the nation and a foreword by the Dalai Lama. It took a few years to publish it but I think it was worth it. Friends described my book as a ... beautifully presented photographic journey through Tibet ... a masterfully photographed labour of love ... a delightful photography book about the beauty of Tibet and its people. If you want to have a truly beautiful book - remember, the best coffee table book there is, according to some - and support the people in Tibet, then don't hesitate to order.

About the Author:
My travel to Tibet led to what could be the first in a series of photography books. Why did I go there and create this book? I enjoy telling stories and there are just so many stories to tell in the world. There is nothing more I enjoy than to interpret the world through visual exploration. One image has the power to influence change, and change is the seed for progress. This motivated my direction towards photography and the still image. I am also passionate about freedom. Freedom to think; to feel; to communicate and freedom to believe. The freedom to find happiness in the small portion of time we have. I am fortunate. I live in a free country. So I feel somewhat responsible to help those who are less fortunate. Upon learning about the plight of Tibetan people and their slow, painful, systematic evaporation into the sands of history, I felt a need to visit this ancient mystical land and experience the place for myself. To try and photograph the hope and joy and the future that remains for Tibet. So I decided to photograph the children. With the ambition to raise awareness about the beauty of Tibet but also their turbulent history and current oppression, and from sales, help raise funds for an established charity involved in the cause. This began an idea to focus on other oppressed peoples around the world. To create a series of photography books called 'child of....' To photograph the joy of the people, their culture and their lands. To promote the beauty of the differences, that exist between people and cultures and therefore develop an understanding - using the power of the still image. In Buddhism there is a saying that a bird needs two wings to fly - wisdom and compassion. Child of Tibet - a lost innocence is my first photography book, and with your help, it wont be the last.
Review:
I believe we still have grounds for hope. I see it in the photographs that Shane Marden has taken in Tibet. For the children of my homeland that we can see here still have the joy and innocence that I remember from my own childhood. Likewise, these photographs of Tibetís marvellous landscape show that with its soaring peaks, rolling plains, vast skies and the immense empty spaces that fostered our unique sense of freedom, the land of Tibet continues to survive. This is from the foreword he wrote for my book. --foreword from child of Tibet by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Thank you very much for the beautiful picture book. I was delighted to see two pictures of my home town 'Tingri' in it. I don't remember much as I left it when I was very young but my sister has a clearer recollection of the place and she described the location to me. She is extremely happy to see the pictures which brought back many memories to her. --Dorjee Dolma
