Eden: A Mill with Nine Lives From the late 1790s to now, this venerable old mill near the confluence of Big Branch and Deer Creek has steadfastly survived as different owners adapted to changing times and market opportunities. Over the years the lives of the mill have been: 1. Sawmill – The first agricultural mill product was old growth timber, which was sawed into boards for constructing homes, barns, sheds, and other buildings. 2. Gristmill – As land was gradually cleared of trees, farmers planted, harvested, and transported grain crops to the mill to be ground into food for human consumption and animal feed.3. Fulling Mill – To improve the density and fullness of hand-woven cloth made from locally grown wool, a water-powered fulling mill was introduced at Eden about 1808. Since area weaving did not develop, this was later abandoned.4. New Process – By the late 1800s the so-called new process flour technology was installed to be competitive with Midwest mills that were shipping products to the area via the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad.5. Roller Mills – On July 1908, about 2 o'clock in the morning, the Mill burned and was quickly rebuilt with improved roller-mill technology. That equipment is still in place today and can be seen by the visitor.6. Dam Breaks – Heavy rains and an immense ice jam two feet thick destroyed the dam in January 1918. About three months later it was rebuilt to a higher level to provide additional power.7. Hydroelectric – Electrical generator equipment powered by water turbines was installed to supply power to resident in the Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania, area. The Stansbury Mansion also received the electricity.8. Gristmill – The mill was expanded with storage buildings on either side and continued to process flour for human consumption and grind grain for animal food until 1964. It was acquired by Harford County a year later.9. Mill Museum – Today, the restored structure, cleaned-up equipment and myriad of wooden chutes and leather belts continue to enthrall visitors at the Historic Eden Mill Museum. The story of the mill's metamorphous over two hundred years is recounted herein. Appendix C puts a human face on the grain processing business with an account of miller Robert McFadden as told by his grandson, Douglas McFadden Washburn.

L'autore:
Jack L. Shagena, Jr. developed an interest in history at an early age while accompanying his parents on visits to Colonial Williamsburg. After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1959, he worked as an engineer, program manager, and aerospace executive for Bendix/AlliedSignal for thirty-four years. Upon retiring in 1993, he began researching Colonial and federal history and wrote Brief History & Walking Tour of Historic Chesapeake City, a former lock town along the nineteenth-century Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. When researching and writing the script for an audiotape, Historic Driving Tour of Cecil County, a chance discovery of a Maryland roadside historic marker identified someone other than Robert Fulton as the inventor of the steamboat. His interest in history and engineering background coalesced and his book, Who Really Invented the Steamboat? Fulton's Clermont Coup, was published by Prometheus in June 2004.Mr. Shagena, a retired registered professional engineer, has also written, Jerusalem – A Restored Mill Village, about a preserved community in Harford County, Maryland adjacent to Little Gunpowder Falls; Bel Air Roller Mills: The Town's First Industry that chronicles the contributions of Henry Reckord and sons to the industrial development of the Town of Bel Air; and An Illustrated History of the Barrel in America. He and his wife, Signe, have ten grandchildren and live in Harford County near Bel Air.
