Demetrius pokes around Rainwood House's shuttered rooms wondering how to beat accusations of cop-shooting and terrorism while remaining incognito under Samantha's friendly but sharp-eyed gaze. Increasingly entangled in each others' lives, the characters join forces with glamorous union shop steward Laranda Moss and a lively crew of supporters to launch, in the words of Labor Notes editor Jane Slaughter, "a cascade of idyllic solutions to very real-world problems," including a friendship club, a people's history museum and a present-day Underground Railroad stop. Juliana Barnet is a social justice activist, artist, musician, anthropologist, writer, popular educator, Spanish language translator and interpreter, working in the DC area and in Mexico. Many of the situations in Rainwood House Sings are drawn from her own experiences and those of her friends, colleagues and comrades. An avid reader of fiction and increasingly frustrated at seeing folks from her “tribe”-the worldwide community of social justice activists-often depicted in literature as cold-hearted, crazy, dogmatic, manipulative, hypocritical, and other evil stereotypes-when they appear at all!-she decided to start writing fiction about her community that is both genuine and entertaining, and to encourage others to do the same. Juliana lives in Maryland with Brian Higgins, coauthor/illustrator/daughter Sophie Barnet-Higgins, and Melau the dog. Sophie Barnet-Higgins has always loved writing stories, as well as doing theater and especially drawing, which, as with Rainwood House Sings character “Samantha,” used to get her into trouble at school. Undaunted, she continued developing her talent in sketchbooks and on the computer. Now in the Visual and Performing Arts program at her public high school she no longer fears being reprimanded for drawing (as long as the sketches on her homework stay in the margins). She’s also an enthusiast of manga and anime, cooking, doing art with little kids, reading and singing. And Tumblr! She is fluent in Spanish and is studying Japanese.
