Not illustrated. 1893 Excerpt: ...Geo. W. Kepner was another old timer and one of the best known office men in the early days of the yards. He died in 1888. White, Allen & Co. was another of the early houses here entering the trade in 1873, Robt. C. White, the head of the firm being a well known Platte county, Missouri, stockman and L. A. Allen had long been on the plains as freighter and trader. Their house at once assumed prominence and did a handsome business up to 1874 when it was dissolved. Mr. White afterwards associated himself with Geo. Holmes under the firm name of White & Holmes, which for twelve years enjoyed uninterrupted success, and is still in business under the firm name of White & Rial, Mr. Holmes having retired some years ago a rich man, but is now a stockholder in the Geo. R. Barse Live Stock Commission Company. With the dissolution of White, Allen & Co., L. A. Allen, J. N. and S. D. Irwin formed the commission firm of Irwin, Allen & Co., one of the best known houses on the yards for seventeen years. They had all been freighters across the plains and had a wide acquaintance through the country, and did a good business from the start. The house divided in the beginning of 1892, L. A. Allen going in business for himself with his former bookkeeper, J. T. Megredy, and the Irwins with the Geo. R. Barse Live Stock Commission Company. But with the beginning of 1893 they again entered the trade for themselves, under the firm name of Irwin Bros. & Co., and L. A. Allen & Co. merged its interests with the Kansas City Live Stock Commission Company. H. B. Tower, Armour's head cattle buyer, was also here in 1873. And so were Pliney & Newcomb, the Illinois boys, but they have long been out of business. Randolph, Nichols & Co. were also among the early...
