IV A HUNGRY MOB Not many days after the riotous meeting of the City Mission, which I attended shortly after my arrival in Berlin, I arranged with the Countess Z and some other ladies to visit the notorious northern division of the city, and speak to some of the men we had seen at that meeting. Our intention was to meet them in the same hall. The winter was an exceedingly bitter one, and the distress was intensely acute. Large numbers of the unemployed and those dependent on them were in sore want of food. Nobody, however, seemed to pay any heed to this alarming state of things. Individual citizens, we may charitably suppose, regarded the destitution as so great as to make it impossible for them to interfere. When I was on the point of driving to the place appointed for the meeting, I received a 106 letter from a member of the Government warning me against going, and informing me that the whole neighbourhood was in an uproar. Thereupon the Countess Z declined to go. I did not believe that the case was so hopeless, and resolved to carry out my intention. I was unwilling to miss this opportunity of helping these men, who seemed to be on the verge of despair and to have lost all faith in their fellows.
