Las Casas presentó la inmediata estincion de las encomiendas como el remedio por excelencia, como la garantia de todos los demas remedios y como la sustancia de los mas importantes. El Emperador debia declarar en las Cortes generales del reino que todos los indios eran libres y sujetos solamente á la corona sin que por ningun motivo al prete...sto pudic ran ser dados en encomienda, deposito, feudo, vasa llage óbajo cualquiera otra calificacion, á ninguna per sona, aunque hubiera prestado sérvícios eminentes, y por mas extraordinaria que llegase á ser la penuria del tesoro. El protector de los indios apoyaba esta me dida en veinte motivos cuya indicacion sumaria no carece hoy de interés, y no puede desagradar á los amantes de la humanidad y de la justicia.
