Since its first emergence in 1983, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has become one of the most versatile trace elemental analysis technique available; and as the technique becomes more refined it will likely serve in a wide range of applications for a long time. This situation, and the fact that at present over 4,000 instruments performing elemental and isotopic analysis have been produced, has led to a need for information on analytical techniques and instrumentation of ICP-MS, particularly in a format accessible to graduate students and other newcomers to the field.
