L'autore:
A bout the Author Though Homer Haswell has been a writer all his life, now at 87 he has written his first book. Born in Madison, Wis., in 1917, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1939, majoring in journalism. He came to Chicago to begin a career in advertising. When World War II broke out, he left his copywriter job to become a yeoman at the Navy's Ninth Naval District at Great Lakes, Ill. Shortly after, at a U.S.O. dance in Waukegan, Ill., he danced with Frances Ellis, of Wilmette, Ill. He discovered that everything about her seemed "just right." They married in October 1942 and have now celebrated their 61st anniversary. In January 1944 he enrolled in midshipman school at Northwestern University's Abbott Hall in Chicago. On being commissioned in May, he received orders to proceed to New Orleans, to report to the LST 698 when it arrived from the shipyard in Jeffersonville, Ind. Fran came with him to New Orleans, and they had a delayed honeymoon while waiting for the ship. His part in the war? That's what this book is all about! After the war, returning to his wife Fran in Wilmette, Ill., he saw their six-month-old son, William Ellis Haswell, for the first time. Soon they added a daughter, Anne Loomis Haswell, and two more sons, Thomas Clayton and James Carson Haswell. Haswell switched to public relations and for many years edited a large-circulation company publication. He was an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and retired in 1985. In 1949 the couple bought their first home in northwest Evanston, Ill., and have lived in this area ever since. Major interests over the years have been their four children and six grandchildren, their church and community activities. Haswell was involved for three decades in the Evanston 4th of July Association. Over a long period he and Fran have studied their family roots, visiting many libraries and cemeteries. He has done considerable writing and photography. Oth
