Marty grew up in what was then called The West Bronx. He claims to be 123 years old, says he’s always been that age. He had some poems (“pieces” he calls them) published around 1970 in THE WILLY, perhaps the best San Francisco mimeographed magazine of that golden age of mimeos. He wrote only sporadically for decades afterwards, choosing instead to expend and replenish his energies teaching young people in several different schools, mostly in Manhattan. In the last four years, he’s gone back to writing. This book contains “pieces” in verse as well as prose. A book of Marty’s short narrative writings, STRAWBERRY GETS IN MY TEETH, will also be published in the near future, as will a book containing several of his one-act plays. Marty is no longer teaching. In addition to writing and reading and spending time with friends, he now hangs out in coffee shops and parks where he passively/actively observes the comings and goings of strangers, many of whom appear in his writings.
