When a young artist ends her life in a bathtub one Sunday morning, the ripples of her desperate act extend to her family, to her village, and especially, to the four women she has worked with and befriended. Sandy's death leaves four artists to maintain the Reach, their dilapidated gallery on the Maine coast. Sales have always been seasonal and infrequent--interest in their work has been limited to a sparse trail of summer folk hardy enough to trudge the rocky path to the gallery in northernmost Washington County, where scenery is beautiful and eking out a living improbable. The artists have limited operating hours of the Reach to Maine's "Open Season"-- Memorial Day through Labor Day. After mulling over their disappointment following yet another unsuccessful season and as Labor Day weekend approaches, Annya, Dennise, Cynthia and Laurene consider permanently shutting down the gallery. The news of Sandy's suicide comes from Sandy's mother on Friday morning, as Cynthia attempts to cover a multitude of scars with a bucket of white paint. This first novel leads the reader through the changes that tragedy brings to the lives of the four artists and their families. Annya, a native of Germany, questions her choice of living "off the grid" with her husband, a retired army colonel. Dennise, county-born, in her late thirties and desperate to be a mother, feels the time has come to persuade her fisherman husband to adopt. Laurene, appointed leader and mentor, discovers that events from her past cannot be kept any longer from those who trust her. Cynthia, weary of a battle with long-standing depression, discovers that life as a wife and mother require serious re-evaluation. Sandy's death forces each woman to a place of self-examination that proves life-altering.
