The story centers on Dominic Streppone, a 30 year-old mentally challenged man with a heart of gold who was abandoned by his parents at birth. At 11 years old, he was placed on a migrant farm and still has nightmares of his tortured existence as an abused, half-starved, and critically ill worker. His two real friends, Augie and “The Hawk”, have changed everything for him. Now, Dominic has a roof over his head and a steady job washing dishes in a deli, and was just elected Citizen of the Year. However, with Augie moving to Chicago and “The Hawk” in a coma after a bad fall, Dominic is terrified he will be returned to the migrant farm. Will anyone come to Dominic’s rescue? As Augie plans his annual fishing trip in pursuit of the elusive Scarback, a massive Northern Pike with an ugly wound on his back and a million-dollar bounty on his head, he secretly invites Dominic’s estranged parents on the trip in hopes of reuniting them with the child they abandoned decades earlier. Will Augie succeed in reuniting them, or will a series of sometimes humorous, often heart-wrenching events further complicate matters and keep them apart?
