I have yet to meet a father who feels like he was well equipped for the job. This book presents a more complete picture of what mature adult fathers looks like. It is rare that fathers get this kind of information. Many men do not even know what a mature father looks like, because our culture paints men as macho, dominant, non-feeling critters. It also encourages men who have avoided and denigrated feminine aspects of their personality. This means being more in touch with their feelings and seeking committed, equalitarian, adult relationships.My research clearly suggests there is a rapidly emerging trend among younger men in our culture that supports being interested in developing and integrating their feminine side. This book presents a roadmap of the emerging feminine side of development for men to follow. Many men silently carry quilt and shame about what they did or did not do raising their children. The idea for this book came to me while I was in the middle of a Skype counseling session with a young father who lived about 5,000 miles away. He asked me what he could do to curb his anger at his two young boys when they interrupted him while he worked on the computer. I advised him that he had to access his “male mother” skills to respond to his children in an effective way. He asked me what I meant by male mother skills. I told him he needed to center himself and get into the life space of his children for the moment to empathize about what they needed. Then he could respond to his children from a nurturing, empathic place. I gave him an example of how that empathy might sound, “I see you want Daddy to play with you right now and you don’t understand why Daddy is so busy on the computer. I also want to play with you and be with you, but I have to finish the email I am writing and send it right away. Come sit on my lap so we can do this together.” This response never occurred to him and he told me he would try that approach next time his children interrupted him. Then I gave him some other male mother skills and he indicated that he thought they would help him in parenting his 2-year-old son. I am a licensed psychologist since 1976 specializing in working with men.I am also Professor Emeritus at The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs where I taught for over 35 years. Currently I am Co-Director of the Colorado Institute For Conflict Resolution and Creative Leadership. I am the author or co-author of over fifty books, Including Breaking Free of the Codependency Trap, The Flight From Intimacy, Breaking Family Patterns and Healing Developmental Trauma. Currently I am the Co-Director of the Colorado Institute For Conflict Resolution and Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, CO. I conduct therapy session, teach classes, do divorce mediation and consult with business and civic groups. I have participated in Men’s Support Groups for the past 38 years. I am married and have been the father or step-father to nine children. I am an avid tennis player and fly fisherman. I can also be found hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
