The story of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the story of how we develop dogs to meet our own needs. When intrepid Europeans colonized southern Africa, they needed a tough, strong dog that could serve both as a guard and a hunting companion. The result was the Rhodesian Ridgeback, and this book tells its story. It also gives present and prospective Ridgeback fans a wealth of guidance on care, training, health issues, the Standard, showing, breeding and a global perspective of this brave lion dog.

Stig G. Carlson, a Swedish national born in Finland, has been involved with dogs since 1968, and now has an international reputation as a breeder, judge and lecturer specializing in Rhodesian Ridgebacks. His seminars have a wide following and he has travelled to South Africa, the United States, England, Israel and Australia on judging and lecturing appointments. Stig has acted as Chairman of the Swedish Ridgeback Club, Chairman of the Stockholm Kennel Club, Vice Chair and Chairman of the SSD (parent club of some 80 breeds) in Sweden, and participated in the Swedish Kennel Club's 100th year anniversary team. In 1988 he chaired the second Ridgeback World Congress, and in 1997 he received the Swedish Kennel Club Merits Award.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback Today The Rhodesian Ridgeback, the hunting dog of Africa, has emerged from relative obscurity to earn a reputation as an impressive show dog, and a loyal companion. Originally bred to accompany big game hunters, the Ridgeback was also highly-prized as a guard dog, keeping out intruders from farms and plantations. Today, the Ridgeback, a strong and agile dog, retains its fiercely loyal character, and, with the right training, is a companion dog par excellence. In this comprehensive book of the breed, the author explores the origins of the Rhodesian Ridgeback, and traces its development in its native home and its spread overseas. The Ridgeback character and Ridgeback behaviour are analyzed, with practical advice on training and socializing. The show scene is examined, with an in-depth interpretation of the Breed Standard. This is followed by a fascinating new feature giving a series of critiques on the great dogs in the breed. For the specialist, there is detailed advice on breeding a litter and health care, including breed inherited conditions, which is given extensive coverage. With contributions from Ridgeback kennels worldwide, this book, lavishly illustrated with top-quality colour photographs, is essential reading for all Rhodesian Ridgeback enthusiasts.
