This work provides an overview of the health informatics field. It is suitable as a basic text in undergraduate and post-graduate courses in health disciplines, and can be used for continuing education. An overview looks at health care services, information systems, and e-health records. Chapters are then devoted to basic health informatics concepts such as interoperability, health care ontologies, the knowledge management life cycle, national standards in health informatics, and medico-legal issues. The next four sections demonstrate how these concepts can be used in supporting clinical practice, health care service delivery management, clinical research, and health informatics education. The first edition was originally published in Australia in 1996. This second edition has been revised to take into account contemporary issues and challenges.
