L'autore:
As a young child, Shahla knew the people of her small town believed in her grandmother Malec's healing skills and her uncanny knowledge of herbs and foods. A revered naturopath, herbalist, and healer, Malec taught Shahla about the unique properties of foods––hot versus cold––and how they work together to cure such ailments as an upset stomach. “See, Shahla,” she would say, “this spice (ginger for example) paired with steamed Saffron rice will help to relieve the problem.” The treasured book of Malec's notes on healing with foods and herbs was lost, but Shaha never forgot them. Today Shahla continues the work her grandmother began with sacred recipes, gently handed down in memory and practice. She has documented and prepared hundreds of wonderful meals, each lovingly created with a purpose in mind: balancing the hot and cold properties of specific foods to provide the utmost in nutrition. Shahla attended college in Australia, graduating with honors in photography and graphic design. She continues her research in the Dallas metropolitan area where she lives with her family.

WISDOM IN THE KITCHEN—GRANDMOTHER'S LESSONS “When I was a young Iranian girl, my mother and father divorced and sent me to live with my grandmother. She was a highly skilled herbalist and healer and yearned to share her knowledge with me. She never missed an opportunity to teach me a lesson about the energy in food and the properties of herbs, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. At eighty-six, she still walked with the vigor of a young woman because she knew how the food we eat affects our bodies. My grandmother possessed the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine as the yin and yang of foods, those that invigorate and those that calm, a balance of “hot” and “cold.” Knowledge of energy balancing is especially important to women because in addition to health benefits, the secrets of beauty and passion reside in this balance. My grandmother taught me which dishes would encourage ardor and romance, which would stimulate a lover's stamina and excitement, and which ones cooled the fervor. The recipes I share include the secrets from my grandmother's kitchen. Over the years, I have created countless recipes based on my grandmother's teachings and my instinct for dishes that are delicious, healthful, and pleasing to the eye. Enjoy!” - Shahla Niazi
