This beautifully written, non-fiction journal chronicles the struggles of East Africa in 1993 and 1994 from the perspective of a first-time medical relief worker. It is a song of praise to all those hardy souls who have been, and continue to be, deep in the thick of things without regard for their personal safety, putting the unbelievably serious needs of others first. It examines the inner frustrations faced by members of non-governmental organizations, who understand the fluidity of war zones and need to plan a year ahead with donors...which is nearly impossible. Despite this, they remain optimistic, capable, trustworthy, and supportive ... with the highest of goals. The plight of the people is heartbreaking. Having had the benefit of a post-war upbringing, the author remembers listening to BBC radio programs which, on lucky occasions, would broadcast the news of the world. These shows instilled in her young mind dreadfully delicious visions of unknown darkness and tribal warfare. In pre-TV America, absolutely everything was left to the imagination. So, how very fortunate she feels to have been able to live a life of purpose and fulfillment, spending her time in Africa giving something back to the world. Not a day goes by ungrateful!
