About the Author:

Barbara Gearhart Matt grew up in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, where a large settlement of German immigrants took place in the mid-1800s. Hearing family stories told by the older generations piqued her curiosity, and an interest in her ancestry began to develop. Thoughts of her lineage persisted while Barbara worked to pay her way through Marietta College and graduated with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, and during the time she continued her education at University Hospitals in Cleveland Case – Western Reserve University, where she earned her MT(ASCP) certification. (Medical Technologist of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists) Barbara worked several years doing hematology clinical and research work, and after marriage and two children, she went to graduate school, earned a teaching certificate in Biology and Chemistry, and worked several years in the gifted program within her local school district, as well as teaching science at the junior high level. All the while, interest in her genealogy remained keen, and it was after the birth of her first child in 1966 that Barbara decided to seriously begin a search that, in the 1980s, netted her first real discovery—her great-grandfather’s confirmation record that included his parents’ names and provided another generation, back to her immigrant ancestor. The confirmation record was written in Frakturschrift, an obsolete style of German handwriting script that, even in today’s Germany, few can read. Fortunately for Barbara, her high school German teacher had studied in pre-World War I Germany and taught the script as a part of her curriculum. Barbara was pleased that her knowledge of the script enabled her to read and translate this record. Believing strongly that the information should be shared as a resource for other genealogists, she eventually translated many more records of several German Protestant Evangelical churches in Washington County, Ohio. In the mid-1990s, as a memorial to her father, Ralph Edward Gearhart (1914-1990), Barbara presented her translated work to the Washington County Public Library’s Local History and Genealogical Archives, in Marietta, Ohio. Interest generated by those stories during Barbara’s childhood led to her own ongoing compilation of notebooks currently containing approximately three reams of paper filled with her families’ lines of data, histories, stories, and pictures – most dating back to the 1600s, and some even further back.
