As manager of his high school football team, Howard was able to exhibit his enthusiasm for helping the injured and the sick as the age of soft leather helmets without face or mouth guards led to many displaced and broken teeth. His pursuit of medical interest led him through school and into the U. S. Army as a Dentist. A true anecdote from his army times: “The setting is the height of the “cold war.” The defense appropriations were lopsidedly going to SAC, with their nuclear-armed bombers. At my dental facilities at Fort Riley, KS we were unable to meet our supply needs for basic dental materials. I heard that replacement parts for army vehicles, including tanks and trucks, and ammunition were also hard to get. When I visited a friend and classmate at his SAC base, I was stunned at the overabundance of dental supplies. There was so much that it literally filled a small warehouse. You can imagine what evolved. I made periodic visits, loading my car each time with everything basic plus the newest technical do-dads. Back at Riley, I made the rounds distributing the rare goodies. My standard reply to questions (especially from my Colonel—an old-timer whose dental acumen plateaued somewhere around WWI) about where I got the stuff was to say, “It is best not to know, but you could think of it as a gift from on high.” Howard's career as a practicing Dental specialist led him into teaching and writing. He is the author of over thirty scientific papers published in Dentistry's Journal of Endodontics. He is a former Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Endodontology, Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, PA; helped establish Dental departments in local hospitals to care for the indigent; and served as Director of the Dental Department at the Muhlenberg Hospital Center, Bethlehem, PA.Long a fan of science fiction, his first published book was of that genre, The Pariah Stigma. His long-term interest in history led him into the study of ancient history and the struggle for survival by the Jewish people captured his attention with the result that three novels on a sweeping canvas from biblical to very contemporary times were generated: An Unusual Encounter, The Shaman and The Jew and Wapasha and the Jew.Howard and his wife Tamara reside in Pennsylvania, close to the ski slopes, where his three children often joined him and Tamara for winter fun-time.
