Maury befasst sich mit der historischen Entwicklung der Beziehung zwischen Wissenschaft und Magie. Das Buch ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Der erste untersucht die Traditionen der Magie und Astrologie in den alten Zivilisationen Persiens, Griechenlands, Babylons, Roms und des Orients sowie den Einfluss des Christentums auf die Magie. Die zweite Hälfte umfasst eine Untersuchung möglicher Erklärungen, wobei Magie im Zusammenhang mit Drogen, Träumen, Halluzinationen, Somnambulismus und Vorstellungskraft betrachtet wird.
