The DECHEMA Corrosion Handbook provides a comprehensivecollection of knowledge which is unique both in scope as well ascontent. Corrosion data and the chemical resistance of alltechnically important metallic, non-metallic, inorganic and organicmaterials in contact with aggressive media are covered, constituting the prime information source worldwide for theselection of materials for equipment in which corrosive media arehandled or processed. Furthermore, methods of corrosion protectionand prevention are also described.

Faced with the task of optimizing a given environment-materialsystem, the user of this work will find answers to the followingquestions:

  • Is there information available on the behavior of the materialunder consideration in a particular medium?
  • Which materials are out of question for the proposedpurpose?
  • Which materials can be used without hesitation in the mediumconcerned?
  • What are the conditions under which a less resistant, lesscostly material will give satisfactory service?
  • Which material offers best performance for value under thegiven circumstances?
  • What protective measures exist: inhibitors, coatings, cathodicprotection, etc.?

L'autore:
Gerhard Kreysa, born 1945, studied chemistry at theTechnical University of Dresden. After obtaining his doctorate, hejoined the Karl Winnacker Institute of the DECHEMA in Frankfurt(Main) where he focused his research interests on electrochemicalengineering and environmental protection. He became Chief Executiveof the DECHEMA in 1992. In the course of his career, ProfessorKreysa has received several national and international scientificawards, and honorary doctorates from the University of Clausthaland the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is a foreignmember of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, teaches at the universities of Dortmund and Regensburg and holdsnumerous honorary positions. He is also actively involved in issuespertaining to research and the public acceptance of science andtechnology.

Michael Schütze, born 1952, studied materialssciences at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1972 to1978, then joined the Karl Winnacker Institute of the DECHEMA as aresearch associate. He received his doctorate in engineeringsciences from the RWTH (Technical University) in Aachen in 1983,completed his habilitation in 1991, becoming a member of theexternal teaching staff of the RWTH. Since 1998, he holds aprofessorship there. In 1996, he was appointed director of the KarlWinnacker Institute. He is recipient of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Prizeand the Rahmel-Schwenk medal, past Chairman of the Gordon ResearchConference on Corrosion, editor of the journal Materials andCorrosion and Chairman of the European Federation Working PartyCorrosion by Hot Gases and Combustion Products.
