Im Dezember 1916 wurde das eigenartigste Kriegsschiff der Kaiserlichen Marine in Dienst gestellt: der Hilfskreuzer SEEADLER, ein dreimastiges Segelschiff, das auf der Tecklenborg-Werft in Geestem¿de umger¿tet und mit einer Maschine ausgestattet worden war. Unter seinem Kommandanten Felix Graf Luckner ging das Schiff auf Kaperfahrt in die S¿see, wo das Abenteuer auf den Korallenriffen der Insel Mopelia am 12. August 1917 ein Ende fand. In dem nun erstmals ver¿fentlichten Kriegstagebuch, das den Zeitraum von der Indienststellung bis zur Ankunft der Schiffbr¿higen in Chile 1918 umfasst, liest sich manches sehr viel n¿hterner und sachlicher, als es Graf Luckner in seinem Bestseller dargestellt hat. So ist zum Beispiel von dem angeblichen Seebeben, das die Strandung auf Mopelia verursacht haben soll, keine Rede, eher darf man den Grund in reiner Schlamperei suchen. Nachdem Luckner die Insel noch im August 1917 mit einem Boot verlassen hatte, f¿rte sein Vertreter, Leutnant Kling, das Kriegstagebuch weiter, und so erfahren wir erstmals N¿eres dar¿er, was die zur¿kgebliebenen 58 M¿ner bis zu ihrer Rettung erlebten.
