Although there are many books on impressionism, this stunning volume by the art historian Norbert Wolf introduces us to the most recent research and with his authoritative voice brings us new approaches to a movement that previously has seemed almost too familiar. Wolf suggests there are two forms of impressionism, synthetic and optical; both types were united in their use of colour to create the fleeting moment of light in their works using the new colour theories of the day, but how they differed in their approach to how they structured their pictures on the canvas. The optical group's first priority was their subject matter and how light helped to describe it; the synthetic side sued their subject matter as a means to use the paint in a tactile way, making colour and light their main interest. Chemically-made paints in tubes were introduced in 1841 and along with other new art materials, meant that artists could now paint outside in daylight and weather conditions; it was only a matter of time before these alone were the subject matter. Wolfe tells us of the art that influenced the impressionists and how they in turn helped to create the art movements that followed through the 20th century right up to the present day. --Gazette & Herald (Ryedale)
