Gerd Presler is an art historian and theologian who has published several catalogues raisonnes on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Edvard Munch, and Max Beckmann, among others. Erik Riedel is an art historian and Curator of the Ludwig Meidner Archive at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966) speiste seine künstlerischen Impulse aus einem inneren Glühen, das ihm den Beinamen »der Ekstatiker« eintrug. Die Spontaneität seines künstlerischen Impetus« findet sich in den Skizzenbüchern in eindringlicher Weise bewahrt. Die Skizze diente Meidner so gut wie nie als vorbereitende Studie für ein späteres Bild, sondern ist eine selbstständige zeichnerische Ausdrucksform. Sein frühestes Skizzenbuch, eigentlich noch ein Schulheft, enthält neben Ornamentstudien auch erste künstlerische Gehversuche des Fünfzehnjährigen sowie das Fragment eines Märchenspieles. Die letzten datierten Blätter stammen aus Meidners Todesjahr. Als »entarteter« Künstler verfemt und ins Exil getrieben, ist Ludwig Meidner längst als herausragender Vertreter des urbanen Expressionismus wiederentdeckt. Seine Gemälde sind im internationalen Kunsthandel begehrt und erzielen Millionenpreise. Trotzdem sind weite Teile seines künstlerischen OEuvres nur unzureichend dokumentiert.
