Jochen Amme (b. 1935) studied architecture and law and alongside his job as a lawyer has devoted himself for decades to the topic of historical cutlery in all its brevity and diversity from pre- and ancient history to the postmodern era. Through his numerous publications, and lectures, exhibitions and loans from his collection (Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Museum fur Lackkunst Munster, Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe, Draiflessen Collection/Brenninkmeyer Mettingen), Amme has become well known in his art-historical specialist subject both among experts and to a wider public.

In 2007 the comprehensive supplementary volume Historic Cutlery II followed. This publication completes the series: Historic Cutlery III: From the Early Period until around 1600. Using a synoptic and fundamentally new concept of presentation, the author provides a fascinating overview of his entire collection. The astounding diversity of forms, especially of knives from the late Middle Ages, is presented in this overview for the first time in an impressive and artistic arrangement, with full-page colour plates.
