The series of works that make up this book originated in a group of magazines about nudist camps that Lakra bought in the Sunday market on Black Lane in London. He comments: 'I bought the magazines at the Black Lane market all at once. There were about twenty of them and cost me five pounds, or something like that. Extremely cheap. It was raining that day and they were wet.' Lakra draws silhouettes onto the magazines in India ink and then scratches them with tattooing needles. Some of the tattoos are created with the same ink but in diluted form; others with pencil, vinyl, or white wash. Dr Lakra (Jeronimo Lopez Ramirez, born 1972, Mexico) is an artist and tattooist based in Oaxaca, Mexico. Apart from tattooing, his art involves embellishing images and other found objects - for instance, dolls, old medical illustrations, and pictures in 1950s magazines - with macabre or tattoo-style designs. He has shown work internationally in many exhibitions including Stolen Bike at the Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, Los Dos Amigos at MACO in Mexico, Pin Up at Tate Modern and Pierced Hearts and True Love at The Drawing Center in New York.
